You can tell that this was somebody's absolute favorite shirt because its broken in to perfection! Bib shirts got their start in the 1800s as uniforms for firemen. They were also used by soldiers and travelers. The large button bib gave an extra layer of protection from the elements, and sometimes served as a large pocket holding pictures or tobacco pouches. It was also easier to remove and wash the bib rather than the entire shirt.
